There is a documentary of Georgia O'Keefe and in it you'd find out more about her work. This skull was originally painted just with the skull and blue background. She only added the red at the end because during that time, there were much talk about "the great America". Her comment was, people talk about the great america, but most of those people have no idea what this great america is. I'm paraphrasing of course. And her use of skulls do not represent death, it is many of the viewers and critics inject their own intepretation of skulls into her paintings.
